Handcrafted Rugs with Color and Style for Every Room

An area rug can add style, character, and color to any room. It is a finishing touch that adds a little comfort and polish to your space. There is a lot to consider when choosing a rug: color, pattern, size, and material to name just a few. Investing in the right rug is just as important as having the right piece of furniture.

When picking a rug, there are many types of materials to choose from including sisal, jute, grass, silk or wool. Sisal, jute, and grass cost less, but don’t last as long and are difficult to keep clean. Once you’ve spilled red wine on it, that rug is over. A high-quality wool rug wears well and develops a patina that makes it look better as time goes on.

For example, the bold, bright designs of Surya rugs are hand carded, hand dyed, hand twisted, and hand loomed to create a quality rug that will give you years of wear. Rugs like those in the Cesar collection are examples of the vibrant design you can get only from a rug made by hand.

Tips on Choosing a Rug

There’s a lot to consider when choosing the right rug for your room, and since styles are subjective, the most important guideline to follow is your own.

Select the Right Size

LIVING ROOM—if you’ve placed your furniture against the wall, the inner feet of your furniture should rest on your rug. If you’ve placed your furniture in the middle of the room, the rug must extend just past the furniture.

KITCHEN—your rug should completely surround your furniture.

BEDROOM—your rug should fit completely around the nightstands and bed.

Choose the Right Style

COLOR—coordinate the rug colors with the existing colors, matching the secondary color of your rug with the main color of your furniture.

DESIGN—in general, the style of your rug is influenced by the style of your room, but it’s up to you. Go ahead and mix contemporary and traditional styles, if that’s your thing.

TEXTURE—textured rugs are visually interesting and can balance the solid surface of your floor, so go ahead and add a little texture to the space.

Whether you choose something traditional, or something more abstract, such as the Perspective collection by Surya, you can add warmth and texture to your rooms. A general rule of thumb is to pick a rug that is two feet smaller than the room’s smallest wall. For example in a 10 x 12-foot room, the rug should not exceed 8 feet in width.

Make sure doors can swing clear. In the dining room, the rug should be at least 18 inches longer than the edge of the table to accommodate the chairs. In bedrooms experiment with runners at each side and the foot of the bed. Or you can place a rug partway under the bed so the remainder of the rug forms a plush mat at the end of the bed.

In larger rooms, the rug should be governed by the size configuration of the room and furniture. In a 15 x 20 foot living room with one large conversation area, the rug should cover and frame the entire area. It should be big enough to allow the front third of the furniture to rest on the rug. In a large room with two smaller conversation areas two separate rugs linked by color or material would work better.
