How to Blend Holiday Décor with Your Home Décor Style

Everyone loves glitter and garlands around the holidays, but the traditional red and green is slowly making way for non-traditional color pairings such as white and brown, green and blue, or white and turquoise. The trends are shifting away from holiday-specific décor to quirky characters such as peacocks, llamas, and elephants. I’m not saying you have to jump on the Pineapple Christmas Tree trend, but you can match your holiday décor with your home décor style to create a chic and sophisticated holiday.

To add some subtle holiday cheer to the blue, white, and gray room above, choose a simple silver and white color place setting, offset by gold, silver, and teal. The neutral palette featured in the Bungalow Seven Piece Dining Set by Paula Deen Bungalow creates a look that is full of coastal cottage charm.

Décor Styles That Work Well Together (and Those That Don't)

Over the years we tend to accumulate furniture pieces that we take with us as we go. From the farmhouse table you bought for your new home to the heirloom dresser that has been passed down from your grandmother, chances are you have a mixture of styles in your home. However, most of us don’t live in rooms that seem separate from each other, so we want our interior design to be balanced and cohesive. Layering in styles can create a dramatic and interesting look, but too much ends up looking confused and uncomfortable. Here are some styles to mix without creating a hodgepodge of styles in one space.

Tips for Creating a Cohesive Space

  • Unify with color by using a consistent palette
  • Mind the scale by pairing pieces of the same size
  • Find balance by choosing items with equal visual weight
  • Distribute pieces equally by mixing pieces of different styles together
  • Choose a dominant style, but use at least two pieces of the less dominant style
  • Pair casual styles together and formal styles together
mid-century modern coffee table and transitional sofa

Traditional and Mid-Century Modern

One of the best ways to mix traditional and mid-century modern décor in a living room is to use a streamlined, mid-century modern coffee/cocktail table, such as the MacArthur Park Granville Cocktail table by Lexington. The architectural stainless steel frame and floating glass shelf create an open and spacious feel that goes well with a traditional sofa. Keeping this in mind, you can add additional mid-century and traditional pieces until you get the balanced look you want.

coastal coffee table and striped upholstery

Coastal and Traditional

As in any home, you can decorate a coastal-traditional home with elements that speak to you. Old with new, coastal with traditional, and personal treasures all play well together and make the space your own. The Put Your Feet Up Square Coffee table by Paula Deen marries the turned legs of coastal style with a traditional finish of dark brown. The coastal palette of sea greens and blues can be seen in the more traditional patterns on the throw pillows. The neutral sofa and striped upholstered chair ties both styles together.

Contemporary and Rustic

Probably the most improbable combination, contemporary and rustic styles can exist side by side if you pay attention to a few guidelines. Natural materials can marry many styles, and this combo is no exception. A rustic wood dining table and modern chairs can work together when they highlight natural materials and earth tones. Another way to marry the styles is to mimic colors and design elements. A contemporary couch nestled next to a rustic table works when throw pillows on the couch mimic colorful accents pieces on the table.

Elements That Can Work with Any Décor

  • Modern Architecture
  • Ornate Architecture
  • Abstract Art
  • Traditional Art, but More Sparingly
  • Natural Rugs
  • Oriental Rugs
  • Modern Side/End tables
  • Asian-inspired Pieces
  • Ornate Mirrors
  • Modern Lighting
  • Traditional Lighting

Styles That Don’t Go Together

  • A rustic or shabby chic coffee table with turned legs and peeling paint will look out of place with mid-century modern furniture.
  • Bright neon colors in a traditional room may be hard to pull off.
  • A shabby chic sofa in a minimalist room will stand out like a sore thumb.
Most of us want rooms that are both fresh and timeless. While that may seem like an oxymoron, keep in mind that timeless is, by definition, always fresh. And mixing styles is one way to get that fresh, timeless feel. Read Baer's Furniture reviews on Indeed.com and see why they have a 4.5 star rating. Coastal Cottage Style: Dos and Don'ts

When you think about coastal cottage décor, many images may float through your mind, such as tiki bars, neon palm tree lights, fishing nets, tons of seashells, and pink flamingoes. Not that touches of kitsch isn’t good for a fun and funky vibe, and if you love a little pink flamingo, by all means, put some in. But too much is too much.

Coastal Style should evoke a casual, breezy, relaxing mood without overdoing it with beachy paraphernalia. However you do coastal, it should have these things in common:
  • Plenty of natural sunlight
  • Ocean-inspired colorway
  • Casual furnishing that features natural textures and fibers
  • Hints of sparkle and shine from glass, metals, and mirrors
  • Natural elements found by the seashore as accessories
That gives you a lot of leeway to create a home that fulfills your vision of a calm, tranquil retreat by the sea – even if the coast is miles away. Once you have the basics down, here are some dos and don’ts to fine-tune your coastal style.

coastal cottage furniture

Do Choose the Right Colors

The coastal color palette is inspired by the sky, ocean, and sand. This means neutrals such as warm, soft sand and weathered driftwood grays as well as nautical navy blue, crisp whites inspired by sailboat canvas and bleached white seashells. Navy walls create the perfect backdrop for the crisp white of the Sandcastle Buffet by Hooker Furniture. Woven panels on the door fronts emanate coastal style and give the room a relaxed feel.

Do Add Color with Accessories

If you like a little color, choose subtle greens found in sea glass, beach grass, and kelp, aquas, and watery sea blues, and steel grays and deep blues reflective of storm clouds over the ocean. Muted reds and oranges are also great accent colors.

Do Let in Tons of Natural Light

When you think of the beach, of course, you think of sunshine and plenty of it. Coastal homes are never dark and gloomy. Keep the window treatments simple, airy, and light so that the sunshine streams in.

traditional shapes in rattan furniture

Do Choose Traditional Shapes in Tropical Woods

The furniture in coastal style is comfortable and casual, but still elegant and stylish. Choose natural materials such as rattan, wicker, cane, and seagrass for chairs. Slip-covered sofas help keep the look casual, or choose durable fabrics for a more tailored feel. Bring in a distressed accent piece to round out the look. Look for pieces that reinvent traditional styles, such as the Bali Hai Cedar Key Oval Back Side chair from Tommy Bahama. Modeled after a traditional side chair, this version features a striking rattan back that is gently rounded with smooth curves and an oval back.

Don’t Get Too Theme-y

Seashells, fish netting, and beach-themed fabric from pillows to sheets will make your coastal cottage style look dated. This goes for lighthouses and life preservers, too. Bring in touches here and there with a nod to classic coastal style. For example, use fish netting as a whimsical curtain tie-back and let the subtleness impress.

Do Add Area Rugs

While carpeting can be a problem if you actually to live near the ocean – think sand, humidity, and musty carpets – area rugs are perfect for this look. Not only are they easier to clean, but they also complement the style and show off gorgeous flooring underneath.

Don’t Forget to Add a Little Artwork

Prints that feature the ocean, sea life, or seascapes are great for coastal cottage walls. A piece of driftwood with your favorite quote painted on it adds a personal touch. Framed prints of pictures you, or someone in your family, has taken add a personal touch.

Do Accessorize with Found Treasure from the Sea

This is where you get to let you and your family’s personality shine. Coastal accessories include glass jars filled with shells or sea glass, specimen pieces of coral, driftwood, and more. Add some brass lamps, silver vases, and coastal prints of throw pillows.

This is also where you can have a little fun. Still thinking about that pink flamingo? Wouldn’t it look great on a throw pillow? Remember, it’s your home, after all, and if you can’t have a little fun with it, who can?

6 Foolproof Home Decorating Rules

Most of us know what we like and don’t like when it comes to decorating our homes – we’ve browsed enough magazines, watched enough HGTV, saved enough Pins to our Pinterest boards, and wandered through enough furniture stores to know what we want or don’t want in our rooms. But decorating requires more than just a sense of style to look good, the proportions of your pieces are equally important.

You’ll hear interior designers talk about scale, balance, texture, and more when referring to good décor. If your furniture pieces are too big or too small, or your room is unbalanced, it will look off. There’s no getting around it, these rules will help you create the perfect space. And the great thing about these home decorating rules is that once you know them, you’ll also know how to break them.

6 Design Trends We're Happy to See Go Away

While we all love the thought of a timeless space, the way home décor trends seem to come and go make getting a classic look a challenge. One day everything is shabby chic and the next thing you know it’s all minimalist wabi-sabi (we like).

Not that there is anything wrong with either of those design styles if that’s what you love. There’s nothing wrong with experimenting with a trend or two, mixing a few unexpected elements into your home décor. However, there are some trends we’re happy to see go away, hopefully never to return.

Best Ways to Use Loveseats in Interior Design

What’s not to love about a loveseat? Compact and comfortable loveseats are the perfect pieces of furniture for apartments, homes, or offices. Their origin can be traced to the 17th and 18th century, when they were developed to accommodate the huge, ornate dresses that women wore in those centuries. Over the years they became more commonly called loveseats, since they comfortably fit two people and are often used for snuggling.

When furnishing a small space, a loveseat is the perfect piece of furniture. They not only fit right in, but they also make the space seem larger and roomier. They can make your room look neat, organized, and put together. To know more about ways to use loveseats in small spaces, read on.

What Is a Loveseat?

If you think of canoodling when you think of loveseats, you are not alone. Loveseats got their name because two people can sit close together on them, exchanging secrets, and yes, even a kiss or two. But they are so much more than that.

Loveseats can be used as mini sofas in small or awkward spaces. They are just the perfect size for an apartment, bedroom, guest room, or even extra seating in the family room. Because of their diminutive dimension, they are easy to move around and so can be placed wherever they are needed, whenever you decide to reimagine your furniture placement. Bigger than a chair-and-a-half, but smaller than a sofa, a loveseat can range from about 58 inches long to as long as 71 inches.

beautoful white loveseat

Add a Little Love to Your Interior Décor

One of the best things about loveseats is that you can use them to bring a little something extra into your décor. They come in so many patterns, designs, sizes, and fabrics, including leather, that they can be used to add texture, color, or interest to your space.

Finding a loveseat you'll love is not all that difficult. For example, the stylish Huntington House Customizable Loveseat is an elegant seating option suitable for any space. You can choose from a myriad fabric options, arm styles, bases, and backs to get the perfect piece.

Consider the size of your space as you look for the perfect loveseat. If it's on the small side, choose a simple style with straight arms – this will make the space look bigger than it is. You’ll have room for a small table and maybe even a chair to go with it. If you are choosing a loveseat for your bedroom, choose one with curvy arms and hidden legs. You’ll want something comfy, cozy, and luxurious for your sanctuary.
In a guest room, home office, or even your family room, choose a sleeper loveseat. This will give you a way to offer a place for guests to sleep without losing the functionality of your space during the day. This is a great option for a guest room that doubles as a home office or craft room. The Luonto Nico Contemporary Full Size Loveseat Sleeper allows you to convert your loveseat into a bed in minutes. It features an innovative, easy-to-open sleeper mattress mechanism that makes setting up your guest’s bed a breeze.

Whether you want extra seating or to make a small space seem larger, a loveseat is extremely versatile. Pair one with a sofa in a large room, or use two together to make the most of small spaces. With so many options, loveseats can work with any style to make your home design look fresh and modern.

What's the Difference between a Couch and a Sofa?

Most of us aren’t too confused if someone says couch or sofa. We know they mean a rather large piece of furniture meant for sitting. So, is there really a difference between the two? Is one more formal than the other? Do they look or feel different?

At first glance, these two pieces of furniture may seem identical, but there are some differences. And although many designers use the term “sofa” exclusively, there are some subtle differences. Knowing the differences may not change what you call this piece of furniture, but will be a useful addition to your fun-fact arsenal.

Learn more about the subtle differences.

beautiful

A Couch Perfect for Napping

Some consider “couch” a more casual term than sofa, and this could be because of the word’s origin. The word comes from “coucher,” the French word for “to lie down.” This piece of furniture gained popularity in the Victorian era. They generally had one armrest, or none, and a tapered back, so were more casual in both form and function.

Although our modern couches are rarely without arms, a couch is more likely to be something you curl up on, take a nap on, and let the dog sit on. Couches also tend to be smaller than sofas, seating 2-3 people comfortably. This Nantucket casual style seating option by Rowe with plush pillows and a skirt-covered base is perfect for a casual family room or den.

In most cases, couches are found in informal and casual settings such as a cozy family room or man cave. And while functionally, these two pieces serve the same purpose, people tend to prefer the term couch when they are referring to a casual, un-stuffy room.

sofa with glass and metal side table

A Sofa by Any Other Name

Sofa, which comes from the Arabic term “suffah,” always seems a little more formal. It was originally a wooden bench covered in cushions and blankets. Not the best place for napping or curling up. Most design professionals admit to rarely hearing people using the word “couch,” and “sofa” does seem to be the industry standard.

Sofas tend to be bigger, seating four or more people, making them a perfect choice for people who enjoy entertaining. This 3-piece, L-shaped sectional sofa from Huntington House provides plenty of seating. Unlike its Arabic namesake, this sofa is actually perfect for curling up on or stretching out and napping. Sofas, in general, are perceived as being more formal and giving out an elegant and classy vibe.

When should you use couch or sofa? Sometimes it just depends. The general consensus is that couch is the older term, probably in use since the Middle Ages. It became more popular during the middle ages when "fainting couches" became common. Either word is appropriate for a big, comfortable piece of furniture perfect for lounging, relaxing, snuggling, and yes, napping.

How Long Will Leather Furniture Last?

You make a lot of decisions when shopping for new furniture. Style, color, and what type of upholstery are the top three. It can be a long, convoluted process and you may have last minute doubts about what is best for your home. And if you are thinking about leather furniture, you may have some questions about how long leather furniture will last.
If you are considering adding some leather furniture to your home, here are some facts that will help you make your next purchase with complete confidence.

beutiful leather living room furniture

Myth: Leather Furniture Doesn’t Last

Since leather is one of the most durable upholstery choices available, I don’t know where this little bit of misinformation came from. Leather furniture can last a lifetime, and often does. A good leather sofa may begin its life in the family room, move to the den or a man cave, and end up in a college grad’s first apartment without batting an eye. Leather is a natural product, so in addition to being durable, it looks better with age.

Myth: Leather Furniture Is Hard to Take Care of

The fact is that leather furniture is extremely easy to take care of. Just wipe up any spills as they happen, give it a wipe down or dusting when needed. Do not use regular cleaning products such as soap, detergents, and solvents. Only use products specially formulated for leather.

Myth: Leather Furniture Is Easily Damaged by Pets and Children

Unless your cat uses your couch as a scratching post or your dog thinks it is a chew toy, your leather furniture is safe. Since spills can be easily wiped up, leather is also a good choice for homes with children.

Myth: Leather Furniture Is Too Warm in Summer and Too Cold in Winter

Again, not so. If you think that your leather sofa will get hot and cold like the leather seats in your car, consider that seats in a car are exposed to more heat and cold than the furniture inside your home. When it is indoors, leather furniture warms to your body heat in winter. And in the summer, since leather is a natural product that can breathe, it stays nice and cool.

Myth: The Only Types of Leather Are "Real" and "Fake"

A common misconception is that there are only two types of leather: "real" and "fake." Many of the negative impressions people have about leather is when they have been misled and bought, fake, imitation, or bonded leather without realizing it. Baer's features 100% leather, high-quality furniture with great value and something they can purchase with great confidence.

The bottom line is that good quality leather furniture lasts much longer than a fabric sofa or chair. It’s also more difficult to puncture or tear than fabric. It looks better as it ages and, with proper maintenance, can last a lifetime.

What's Old Is New Again: 5 Home Decor Trends Making a Comeback in 2018

"The more things change, the more they stay the same" can apply to many areas in life, especially home décor. Jumping on trends can be fun, but sooner or later you want your home to be a sanctuary that welcomes you at the end of the day. So while new trends are constantly emerging, there are many tried-and-true styles that are making a comeback in today’s interiors. You might say that some of these have never really gone out of style, and others are a fresh take on an old favorite.

gallery wall adds impact

It’s Not Your Grandmother’s Gallery Wall

Gallery walls are coming back in a big way, and I do mean big. In fact, in some circles, the gallery wall never went out of style. It’s a great way to display art, photos of family and friends, and even vintage pieces. Plus, it boosts your room’s overall décor. The individual pieces may be small, but displayed together they have a big impact.

Surrounded by black and white prints, the classic lines and plump box seat cushions of the Grandview Four Piece Sectional sofa from Bernhardt create the perfect space for watching the big game, binge-watching your favorite show on Netflix, or relaxing with the latest bestseller.

Fresh take: Mix framed art, mirrors, inspiration words, and more to create an eclectic and eye-catching display. Keep continuity with frames that match in style or color or artwork that has a particular theme.

It’s All There in Black and White

What’s black and white and red all over? It could be a classic black and white color scheme highlighted with pops of red. Although black and white has been around for what seems like forever, it is not likely to go out of style any time soon. In fact, it is considered one of the trends least likely to go out of style. Ever. Perhaps that’s because it screams sophistication and elegance. No matter how color trends fluctuate over time, this color combination will always be the best classic blend.

Fresh take: While there’s nothing wrong with pops of red, you can freshen this look with pops of lime green, turquoise, or bright pink.

It’s a Reunion of Avocado Green and Harvest Gold

Retro color palettes are making a comeback, as proven by the rising popularity of avocado green and harvest gold. It gives your home a warm, welcoming vibe with its soothing tones. Popular in the 70s, this color combo may just stick around for a while, probably because of all the nostalgic feels it brings with it.

Fresh take: Go all in with bold green paint on the walls, subtle colors in the area rug, and mix-matched chairs. Choose a retro piece in green leather and an overstuffed one in harvest gold. Set the look with a brass chandelier.

zen design leather furniture

It’s Oversized and Proud of It

With so many homes featuring great rooms and other multiuse spaces, oversized pieces have taken center stage. When you need one perfect piece in a space, an oversized piece is your go-to solution. While we may have been shying away from oversized furniture in the past few years, expect this trend to get bigger in the coming year. A glass-topped coffee table with an open framework, such as the Island Fusion Nobu Square Cocktail table from Tommy Bahama, provides functionality while taking up less visual space.

Fresh take: When using oversized furniture in a small space, pay attention to balance. Offset your oversized sofa with a chair with delicate legs, and a glass-topped coffee table.

It’s Brassy but Not Brash

It’s hard to believe that a simple piece of metal could add so much to your interior décor. Brass is as bright as the sun and as shiny as a star, so maybe it’s not that surprising after all. Its luster may have been fading, but it began trending in 2016 and expected to continue its upward trend this year. So if you were just about to cart your brass to the thrift, stop right there. Shine it up and give it pride of place.

Fresh take: Use brass lanterns as candle holders and display with greenery for a subtle look. If you want something more dramatic, hang a brass cage chandelier in the dining room or kitchen.

If you’ve always like retro style, you are in luck. Adding just a little bit here and there will give your home a nice touch of elegance that is sure to last for years to come.

4 Types of Lighting for the Living Room

Most homeowners spend a ton of time deciding on what type of sofa they want, the colors in the upholstery, and the paint color for the walls in their living room. They often forget how important it is to have the right type of lighting. This is a room that sees a lot of action: watching TV, reading books, entertaining guests, and playing board games. The type of lighting you choose not only helps set the mood, but also makes the room more functional.

Lighting can be magical. Good living room lighting consists of various types of lighting, placed at different levels to work together to make the entire space attractive and warm. Using dimmers can help you control the lighting to match the activity of the room.

Below are the four types of lighting that will make your living room warm and inviting.

beautiful bookcase lighting

Draw Attention with Accent Lighting

If you want to highlight a special feature of your living room, such as textured walls or a piece of art, accent lighting does the job. Use recessed lights that you can adjust to points of interest. Another option is a wall cabinet display case, such as the Cherry Creek Wall Storage Cabinet from Hooker Furniture with a built-in light that highlights selected objects.

Accent lighting adds variations of brightness that pleases and directs the eye. Accent lighting should shine about 5 times as much light on your focal point as the surrounding light in the space.

Cast a Warm Glow with Ambient Lighting

The pieces you use for ambient lighting - chandeliers, ceiling lights, portable lamps, and wall-mounted fixtures - cast a warm glow over your living room. They control glare and provide the warm illumination that makes your living room inviting and comfortable.

This lighting influences the overall quality of light in the living room, and is generally used more than the other types of lighting. This is where you Would want to use dimmers and other energy efficient solutions.

Use Decorative Lighting to Create a Little Flair

Decorative lighting gives your space interest, intimacy, and coziness. This means hanging pendants, chandeliers, and table lamps. They can dress up or dress down the look of your room, depending on your style.

Lighting for the Task at Hand

When you want to play cards, write at a desk, or read a book, task lighting helps you get the job done. This can be a brighter floor or table lamp with a swinging arm, or a direct light source. Since this a very localized light source, positioning is key.

A combination of floor lamps and table lamps, some that shine upward and some with a downward glow. When choosing the lighting for your living room, consider design and function to get the right mix.

Color Trends to Expect in 2018

Grays have really been embraced the past few years, in fact, you might say that they have unpacked their boxes and moved in. So, it should surprise no one that this color informs emerging color trends. Earthy shades and bold colors will warm up grays and edge out neutrals to create a more sumptuous look.

Add to that society’s current need to get away from information overload that has caused a craving for silence, and you get deep, comforting colors that offer a much-needed escape from the chaos of daily life.

Purples Reign in 2018

Bold, beautiful, and undeniably provocative purples add energy and depth to any room. And there are so many beautiful purples from Ultra Violet, Pantone’s Color of the Year, to Love Symbol #2, their homage to Prince’s indelible mark on music, fashion, art, and color.

Dark deep purples on the wall and floor in this dining room are highlighted by the Heather Gray and neutral upholstery of the Criteria Side Chairs by Bernhardt. Mirrors, metallic, and crystal accessories give the room an inherent sense of modern glamour.

How to use purples in your interior décor: When used on statement pieces, interior doors, accent walls, kitchen cabinets, and foyers, deep purples make a bold statement that is hard to ignore. If you prefer, experiment with home accessories such as pillows, ceramics, or throws.

Wanderlust Comes Home to Roost

Rich, jewel-toned green-blue offers a sense of the unknown and bridges the gap between light and dark, old and new. It speaks to a growing sense of adventure inspired by the connection of people and places. Ocean-inspired blues and teals respond to changes in light, which creates intense dimension.

These multi-dimensional colors can be used to make a welcoming and lively statement on a front door, or to boost clarity of thought and creativity in a home office. It works beautifully with unexpected colors such as animated fuchsia and creamy yellow.

Paint the Walls Red Hot Red

This is the year of strongly hued colors, such as exotic reds that give homes a sense of impactful design. The power of red, even in small doses, is vibrant, charismatic, strong, radiant, and full of energy. This passionate and pleasing color projects total confidence – both in your design sense and your life.

Used as bold color accents, bright reds are best paired with airy, peachy tones or combined with other bright colors to create a playful spaced. Alternatively, for a chic, modern vibe, paint the walls red and use crisp, white furniture to make them pop. The vibrant energy of red easily becomes the focal point of any room.

beautiful yellows bring sunshine in

Call Me Mellow Yellow

This year will see a preponderance of sunny, goldenrod huts to make a cozy, cheerful statement. It has a retro 70’s vibe that fills any space with happiness. These warm, rich yellows feel all-natural and organic, and work well with deep sky blue, grass green, and rich brown accents.

Yellow’s warm undertones create an instantly welcoming space and invigorate a room. This sophisticated, under-the-radar shade has been out of vogue long enough to have fresh appeal. Use it on cushions with white wooden furniture, or paint it on the walls and highlight it with white, such as the Sandcastle Woven Panel bed by Hooker furniture. Whether you warn up a space with yellow walls, or use it with a light hand, it will be the star of the room’s décor.

This Blush Doesn’t Hide

Peachy, salmon-y, ashy rose hues dubbed “Millennial Pink” have become one of the most ubiquitous and versatile colors. This version of pink acts like a neutral because it is not too sweet, twee, or juvenile. Rather, it is chic and romantic, the perfect color to reinvent any space in your home.

Evoking feelings from joy to passion, this barely-there color merges the vivacity of classic pink with the simple chic of ecru, which makes it a relatable, mood-enhancing hue. Use it to create a warm, spring feeling or as a neutral to balance the many bold colors trending this year.

If you love color, you are going to love interiors spaces in 2018. With so many fresh, popping palettes and the continued inclusion of old favorites, there’s something for everyone. It is truly the year of living colorfully.

Prepare Your Tropical Patio Decor for Spring Entertaining

With its abundant fragrant blooms, spring is one of the most beautiful times of the year for outdoor entertaining. Nothing beats sipping some lemonade - or something stronger - surrounded by tropical patio decor and the scent of night blooming jasmine. It doesn't take much to put together the perfect outdoor entertaining space.

Comfortable Outdoor Furniture for Seating and Eating

Whether you cook outside (I'll get to that later) or just serve outside, you'll need plenty of comfortable seating for your guests. A dining table, so that you don't have to balance a plate on your lap while trying to eat, is a necessity. Choose one that will fit the type of entertaining you plan to do.

If your style is on the formal side, the Island Estate Lanai Outdoor Double Pedestal Table by Tommy Bahama has the right mix of formal and casual elements for outdoor entertaining. It features a Weatherstone table top that is more durable than stone or marble. The flared, intricately woven double pedestal bases bring a subtle element to your tropical patio decor. You can amp it up by upholstering the chairs in a bright tropical print, or keep it simple with a neutral fabric.

Throw Some Shade for Your Guests

Despite cooling breezes, the Florida spring sun can become intense, so make sure there is shade for your guests. It can be as simple as an umbrella or as fancy as a pergola, but a source of shade is a must-have for your guests when the sun is out. This allows your guests to enjoy the outdoors without risking sunburn or seeking refuge inside.

There are many options, from arranging seating undercover to putting up a temporary awning. Guests can take a refreshing dip in the pool and then retire to a shaded area to avoid the strong rays of the sun.

Create Comfortable Conversational Areas

It's a good idea to have some areas with comfortable seating arranged to inspire conversation. Outdoor furniture has evolved from a simple lawn chair to full-blown sofas, chairs, and tables. For example, the Island Estate Lanai Outdoor Scatterback sofa by Tommy Bahama enhances your tropical patio decor. It features Sunbrella outdoor upholstery with the look and feel of indoor textiles but the durability and fade-resistance of outdoor textiles. This is also a great way to show your tropical style with colorful fabrics and fun patterns.

A Place to Prepare Food

Whether it be an elaborate outdoor cooking station or a simple grill, having a place to cook food outside can make your entertaining easier. No one wants to be stuck in a kitchen inside missing all the action. If the kitchen is outside, that makes entertaining much more fun for everyone. To make it simple, serve a mix of cold salads that can be made or purchased ahead of time and simple meats and vegetables grilled to order.

Outdoor Lighting to Set the Mood

If your soiree will be after dark, you'll need plenty of lighting so that your guests don't stumble around in unfamiliar territory. Permanent pendant lights or wall-mounted options made for outdoor use will give you the brightness you need. You can also add temporary options such as paper lanterns or string lights.

Fire Pit for Outdoor Romance

There are still some cool spring evenings where you might want to gather around a fire pit. Not only will this help keep your guests warm, it will enhance the ambiance of your entertaining space. A stand-alone gas fire pit, such as the Island Estate Lanai Outdoor Gas Fire Pit combines modern design with tropical touches that will draw the eye and invite your guests to sit and visit.

Including one or more of these tips will ensure that you have an inviting outdoor space perfect for large gatherings or intimate get-togethers all spring long.

Decorating Colors That Go with Brown Leather Furniture

There’s nothing quite like the luxurious, upscale look of brown leather furniture. And it’s so versatile. Neutral browns can easily live with a variety of complementary colors to create a soothing, tranquil space, or they can rev up the color scheme with vibrant energy. If you are struggling to style your brown leather furniture, try some of these tips to make an impact.

Before you choose the colors you want to use to style your brown leather furniture, consider the existing color palette of your room and the style of your furniture.

Create Contrast with Your Walls

Too much brown can be dull and lifeless. Opt for a light wall color to create a dramatic contrast. Light walls will also make your space feel more open, spacious, and cheery. Light neutrals such as soft white, light yellow, and creamy beige make a great foundation for any palette.

If you want to spice it up a little, create an accent wall in a vibrant color such as turquoise blue, lime green, and sunflower yellow. If you are going for a more earthy palette, use sage green, burnt orange, or brick red on your accent wall. A soft green or blue will give you a more relaxed, serene feel.

Treat Your Windows Well

Fabric window treatments will add both softness and texture to your room. Keep the look streamlined and simple with light tan or creamy window shades. Floor length draperies in warm colors such as terracotta red, golden yellow, and sage green will bring in the drama. Using curtains with brown-and-white stripes, floral, chevron, or another print will perk up the design. If you want surprising and intense visual interest, use citrusy lime green or orange. You can’t go wrong with crisp white sheers for a fresh, bright look.

Accessories and Lighting to Complement Your Brown Leather Furniture

Lively green, blue, and white throw pillows will add an outdoorsy freshness to your sofa while softer blues, light grays, and crisp whites give you a clean, crisp feel. No room is complete without something from nature, so bring potted plants and vases of flowers to add some organic freshness. If you need a touch of neutral in your space, add an arrangement of white candles on a metal tray, or a grouping of white pottery in various shapes and sizes. Framed, sepia-toned photographs will enhance the brown of your sofa and create a classic look. Or you can liven things up with a colorful abstract painting.

Don’t forget the lighting, especially task lighting for hobbies and reading. Black wrought iron or brushed chrome give the room a modern, industrial look. If you feel the room is too dark, add recessed ceiling lights to brighten it.

Brown leather furniture is like a blank canvas. You can style it any way you wish to get the look you desire.

Why Buy Classic Furniture instead of Following Trends

When choosing furniture pieces, it can be tempting to rush out and grab onto the latest trend. Resist that urge. As challenging as it may be, take your time and choose your furniture pieces wisely. I’m not saying don’t have fun with your interior design. I’m saying be mindful of what you choose.

While a trendy piece here and there can add some flair to your interior design, there are a few classic furniture pieces you should buy rather than following the trends.

Choose a Sofa You Love

Think of your sofa as a long-term relationship. You may not be together forever, but you will be together for quite a while. You’ll go through many changes. A classic piece in a classic color will take you through a variety of interior changes.

A comfortable and stylish sofa such as the Monica Transitional Sofa from Broyhill will stand the test of time. The high-quality coil cushions provide even and resilient support. The neutral fabric can be spiced up with rusts and reds, brightened with greens and yellows, or kept neutral with creams and beiges. This versatile piece melds into any design style.

A Chest of Drawers That Fits in Anywhere

It’d be hard to find a piece of furniture more versatile and practical than a chest of drawers. It can be used as an entryway table, a hallway table, a bedside table, TV stand, or even a wet bar in the living room. Over its lifetime it can store clothing, dining room linens, and even legos.

The smaller bachelor’s chest is almost as versatile as its bigger cousin. Its smaller size makes it perfect for a small hallway or even a bathroom. Look for a piece that isn’t too deep, so it will fit in narrow spaces. A classic chest of drawers will feel right at home alongside your industrial metal chair or a traditional, tufted chaise.

A Beautiful Bed That Stands the Test of Time

The bed is the centerpiece of your sanctuary – your bedroom – so choose one you love. Clean, classic lines will go with just about any style. There are several classic types of beds to choose from: platform, headboard only, panel, and more.

The Monterey Sands King Cypress Point Bed by Lexington features a harmonious balance between contemporary and traditional design with clean, architectural lines and timeless details. The sandy brown Cambria finish gives it a natural look that can blend in with either a sleek leather chair or a comfy, overstuffed, upholstered one.

A Dining Room Table with Extra Leaves

A dining room table with extra leaves will give you the seating you need for gatherings large and small. This is where you will gather for meals, game night, and special occasions. A classic dining room table will give you room for all of these activities. Sure, eating breakfast at a counter is quick and easy, but having a classic dining room table lets you accommodate a crowd when you need to.

By using classic furniture styles in your decor, you can create a home that is a timeless backdrop for trends that come and go. Classic pieces that work today will also work down the road. Choose things that appeal to you, no matter what the trends are. This will give you a home that adapts gracefully to changing styles.
