5 Timeless Interior Design Ideas That Work

In interior design, where trends change with the seasons, changing your décor with every new trend that comes along would make your head spin.

So, how do you make sure your interior design is always on point? How do you create the perfect balance between fun and classic, timeless and trendy?

These tips will help you get a foolproof timeless interior design that is both curated and comfortable.

Image: https://www.interiordesigninfo.com/

What Is Timeless Design?

Before I get into the specifics of how to get the look in your home, here are a few elements of timeless design.
  • Neutrals – a neutral background is a key feature of timeless interior design.
  • Clean lines – highlight the lines and shapes of your house’s architectural details.
  • Colors – feature colors like navy blue, dark green, and black that will always be in style. Dark colors like these complement neutrals.
  • Antique furniture – decorate with antiques that contribute to the timelessness of a space’s décor. Whether a piece that’s been in your family for years or a traditional piece, furniture that's stood the test of time makes for the right atmosphere.
  • Patterns – use time-tested patterns such as stripes, checks, and plaids.
  • Natural materials – stay away from plastic and synthetics.
  • Proportions – select furniture in proportion to the space.
The end result should be a room that exudes subtlety, simplicity, and elegance.

Achieving a Timeless Look in Your Home

If you're ready to get a look for your home that will stand the test of time, follow these guidelines to get the perfect look.

1) Symmetry

When you keep in mind symmetry and balance, your interior design will always be pleasing to the human eye.

There are 2 ways to achieve symmetry in your design:

A) Divide Space in Half

The easiest way to achieve symmetry is to divide the space in half and use pairs of the same or similar objects to create matching halves of the room.

B) Use a Focal Point

The other option is to choose certain focal points and create symmetry around them. You can use a sofa or mantle – be creative, as long as you create a mirror image (matching sofas) or two balanced, complementary halves (mantle as a focal point).

A symmetrical room offers a sense of balance that is pleasing and soothing to the human eye.

2) Use of Classic Patterns

Classic patterns are the hallmark of timeless interiors – plaids, stripes, florals, and damasks. This means giving up animal prints, chevrons, and cluttered geometric prints. If you love these patterns, use them mindfully, and be aware that these patterns don’t always weather the test of time very well.

Another guideline for using patterns is to limit the number of patterns in a room to three in three different sizes. For instance, consider mixing a large striped sofa with checked curtains and a floral rug. You can play with the sizes however you like as long as you have three scales.

3) Quality over Quantity

It is important to keep in mind that quality materials are timeless. This means that instead of cluttering up a space with multiple pieces that confuse the eye, you use a few quality, eye-catching pieces.

Choose good quality furniture, upholstery, and accessories. With high-quality pieces, you get outstanding durability and a beautiful look that lasts.

4) Creating a Focal Point

Focal points add an aesthetic dimension and elevate the look of any space. They are accents in a room that draw the eye in a pleasing way. Some rooms have natural focal points, such as a fireplace, French doors, or a large picture window with a gorgeous view. If the room doesn’t have a natural focal piece, you can create one by painting a statement wall or adding artwork.

5) Tone Down on the Tech

It seems like we can’t live without our devices, so if you can't give up your TV, at least hide it or tone it down. It helps that TVs and speakers aren’t as big and bulky as they used to be. Tech has gotten smaller and more inconspicuous, so even if you are the most avid TV viewer, it is easier to create décor in a way that doesn’t put the TV front and center in the space.

When putting your spaces together, keep in mind that all trends have an expiration date, so avoid incorporating them in a major way. Instead, be mindful with color, customize your style, and be practical. Whether your style is classic, eclectic, or somewhere in between, you can create a timeless design as long as you keep the basic guidelines in mind.

What Is Florida Style Furniture and Décor?

When you live in a tropical climate, it makes sense that your home décor reflects that with Florida-style furniture and décor. No matter where you live, you can create the feeling of being at the beach by bringing some of that vibe into your abode.

The biggest reason Florida style furniture remains popular is that it helps you create a warm, relaxing, and inviting space in your home. An area where you can enjoy time with family and friends as well as the rare instances when you have time to yourself.

If you're looking to integrate a Sunshine State feeling into your home, learn what to look for with these tips.

The Colors of Florida Décor

Just as the sound of the waves can create a relaxing atmosphere, so can adding Florida colors to your décor. Soft tropical colors such as seafoam green, cream, sky blue, living coral, sandy brown, and gentle gray are often used in Florida décor. Deeper blues and bright citrus colors can be added to create impact. Against these colors, accents of coral patterns and decorative glass are especially striking.

Coastal Living Furniture Patterns

Over time, specific patterns have come to represent Florida style décor. One of the great things is there is a lot of variety to choose from, so you can fit almost anything you like into the style. Stripes, botanical, and trellis patterns can all be used.

How to Decorate Each Room in Your Home, Florida-Style

So how does all this work in your home? Florida style furniture can be used to add charm and relaxation to every room. Here are some ideas to spark your creativity.

Florida Style Furniture and Décor for the Living Room

Whether you call it a living room or a family room, this is where you want to create the most relaxing vibe. In Florida design, the living room should be a great place to play games with the family, have casual conversations, read a good book, or take a quick nap during a lazy afternoon.

Above, the Florida style living room with the Island Estate Boca Cocktail Table with Woven Accents from Tommy Bahama Home does just that. Not too fancy for a casual afternoon, but not too casual for entertaining, this room is Florida décor to a T. The light upholstery and fresh green color create a bright, airy, and open feel. The eclectic mix of furniture in this room is playful and fun.

Florida Style Furniture and Décor for the Dining Room

When considering Florida style for your dining room décor, simplicity is key. Rugs made of sisal or jute bring in a touch of nature and create the perfect foundation for the Ocean Breeze 5-Piece Dining Set from Tommy Bahama Home. The wooden furniture in the fresh shell white finish is the epitome of Florida furniture style. The metal table base and woven chandelier make a perfect juxtaposition of style and materials.

Florida Style Furniture and Décor for the Bedroom

The bedroom is your private space, so here you can show off everything you love about Florida style. Of course, you want to craft a soothing, calming atmosphere and pull the look of your entire home together by weaving calming tones throughout.

That doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with color, as seen in this bedroom featuring the Bali Hai Bedroom Group from Tommy Bahama Home

This style of furniture gives you the best of both worlds — eclectic and exotic combined with luxurious style. Your master bedroom will feel like a relaxing spa or resort with this bed, upholstered in Bermuda Sands fabric and featuring intricately carved artichoke finials. The coral motif in blue paired with the paisley print on the bed brings in plenty of color.

These are just some of the many ways you can design a casually chic home with Florida style furniture and décor. What touches would you add to create your own personal haven?

4 Tips on Finding the Perfect Headboard

The focal point of any bedroom is the bed, and one of the first impressions is certainly made by the headboard.
Choosing the right headboard can make all the difference to the look and feel of your bedroom. There are many headboard options, made in many different materials, so knowing what to look for and what you want will help you find the one that suits your life and enhances your style.

These four tips can help you choose the right headboard for your space.

1. Focus on Your Headboard Style

The right headboard will add an element of interest and fashion to your bedroom. The most important thing to remember is that your headboard should reflect who you are. Material and texture will make a difference.

A classic, elegant example is a tufted headboard such as the Michael Weiss Tufted Headboard Bed by Vanguard Furniture Bowers.

Embellishments such as lace, metallic, or, in this case, deep button tufting, add to the overall interest of your headboard. The deep button tufting on this headboard makes this bed a polished centerpiece in the space. The winged shape and chic edging keep the look timeless.

2. Headboards Come in a Variety of Materials

When you start shopping for a headboard, you’ll soon notice that they are available in a multitude of materials, from wood to metal to fabric.

Wooden headboards can be either traditional or contemporary, and come in many types of wood, such as mahogany, teak, pine, and walnut. Different stains and shapes create a wide variety of options.

Metal headboards can be simple and clean, or elaborate patterns that evoke a different era. Whether modern or traditional, these headboards may come in wrought iron, steel, or an alloy, and some feature coatings so you can customize the color to your heart's content.

Upholstered headboards come in an array of fabrics, from satin to leather. With upholstery, you can get creative with color and detailing, such as buttons, patterns, and trims.

3. Headboard Size Matters

Of course, your headboard needs to fit the size of your bed, but you also need to take into consideration the size and proportions of your bedroom. Most headboards are offered in king or queen size, such as the Oxford Transitional Queen Sleigh Bed with USB Ports by Aspenhome.

If you have a smaller space, you may want to opt for a more compact headboard, and likewise may wish to forego a full-frame bed in favor of a headboard accompanied with a simple metal bed frame.

In a larger space, if you want to make a statement, oversized headboards are on-trend as we move into 2021. Some options extend your headboard to ceiling-height, while others can span the width of an entire wall, adding texture and dimension to your bed.

4. Headboard Style and Color

Whether you buy your headboard first and design your space around it, or it is the finishing touch on your design, you need to keep the overall look you want to create at the forefront of your mind. If you’ve got a feminine design, you’ll want to enhance this theme with your headboard. A tufted headboard or embellished headboard will match your bedroom’s aesthetic. If your style is minimalist, go with something simpler with clean lines.

Similarly, you’ll want your headboard to support your color palette. You can go two ways with this:

  1. Complement your palette: choose a neutral shade that goes with your palette to give your bedroom a light and airy feel. Calm, soothing colors work well in bedrooms, creating a relaxing atmosphere for sleep.
  2. Contrast with your palette: choose a darker headboard that will stand out when used with a lighter palette, or vice versa.

The juxtaposition of the dark wood in the Island Fusion King-Sized Shanghai Bed Headboard from Tommy Bahama Home against the lighter wall behind creates a stunning look in this bedroom. The natural materials and neutral palette keep it calm and soothing, while the fretwork on the headboard creates depth. The Pan-Asian design brings harmony and balance to the otherwise contemporary space.

Keep these tips in mind when it's time to shop for your headboard. Choosing the right headboard doesn’t have to be a chore. Armed with knowledge, you’ll find the one that suits your space and style.

Offsite Blog: Bring Winter Colors into Your Living Room Décor

As the nights get cooler and darkness falls sooner, thoughts of winter fill our heads. Even if you don’t live in an area with frosty weather, you can still bring a little winter warmth into your home.

As one of the most used rooms in the home, there’s no better place to show off your home’s winter décor than the living room. It’s comfy, cozy, warm, and welcoming, no matter where you live.

If you enjoy incorporating seasonal colors into your home and want new living room winter décor ideas, keep reading for some tips and inspiration.

Add Some Seasonal Delight to Your Living Room

It’s the little touches that make a difference, as you can see in this warm living room. Rich brown leather furniture and creamy white walls work well in any season. All the room needs are subtle touches.

Creating a centerpiece filled with red apples, dried flowers, and some greenery, will make the room feel extra special for the winter holidays and beyond. Another idea is to add some scented pinecones and up the ante with the comforting aroma of cinnamon and vanilla. These touches create an atmosphere that easily moves in and out of the holiday season.

Add Winter Pillows and Throws

Comfort and warmth are a major part of winter feels. Liven up your space by adding crisp white or jewel-toned fabrics.

In the kitchen and bathroom, you can update your dishtowels, hand towels, and even washcloths in ruby red, hunter green, or sapphire blue to make the holidays bright. In your living room and throughout gathering spaces, add pillows and throws in these colors to create a nice touch for the season. The bedrooms can also get this treatment, whether it be your windows or your bed.

Adorn Your Door for the Winter

Get your guests into the spirit of the season by hanging a festive floral arrangement or wreath on your front door. Look for rustic ones with twine, greenery, dried oranges, and cinnamon, or fancier ones with brightly-colored flowers. When it comes to door displays, the options are endless.

Add Winter-White Flowers in a Pretty Vase

If you don’t want to go all out, that’s okay. Do it subtly by adding a pretty vase of winter-white blooms to the dining room table. It will freshen up the space and bring a little reminder of the season into your dining room. It’s easy to spice it up a little for special occasions, or just let the flowers speak for themselves.

Scent Your Home with Winter Flavors

Fill the air in your home with scents of the season. This can easily be achieved with candles in cinnamon, vanilla, and pine scents.

If you're feeling DIY, you can make your own scent mix with a simmer pot on the stove. Just add your favorite fall spices, such as cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger. Add some sliced oranges or cranberries, and even a dash of vanilla. Experiment until you get the scent you want. These scents will add a special touch to the wonderful winter colors that fill your home.

Refresh Your Living Room Style

Some people love graphic contrast and clean, modern lines while others gravitate to more eclectic or rustic designs. No matter what your living room style, at some point, you may feel like you are stuck in a rut with the same style you’ve had for the last decade or so. Or even just season, depending on your need for change.

You’ve probably spent a great deal of time, effort, and thought to achieve the look you want, one that reflects your aesthetic and your personal style, so you may hesitate to give that up. Luckily, you don’t have to. If you still like your aesthetic and feel it reflects who you are, but may need a little refreshing, you’ve come to the right place. You can easily freshen up your design without tossing everything out and starting over.

Begin by looking at your living room with fresh eyes. It’s not about getting rid of those things you’ve lovingly chosen for your home, it’s about looking at them in a new way and tweaking your design to give your space a refresh. So, you may not have to get rid of your grandfather’s secretary if you don’t want to, you may just end up placing it in a different room where it has more use and freeing up the space in your living room for something else.

Here are some living room style ideas to refresh your home and update your design.

Rearrange Your Furniture

A great way to refresh your living room is to rearrange your furniture, and maybe add a new piece or two. Begin by clearing the space to see what you have to work with. Make a list of what you have and what you think you’ll need. Sketch out a few ideas, or use a free design app, that way you won’t have to move the furniture too many times. Your helpers will thank you for that.

Then add pieces back mindfully to create the look you are going for. This will also help you see where you have room for something new. The Lexington Upholstery Barrier Swivel Chair with Nailhead Trim is a great choice. Its clean lines and modern shape fit into any décor. And, it is available in 751 cover options, so you can find one that goes with your current color palette.

Add Colorful Pillows

Almost nothing creates a fresh look in your living room like switching out the throw pillows. It’s easy, and you don’t have to move furniture around if that’s not your thing. Adding some bright, tropical pillows gives your room a pop of color, or you may prefer some lighter, woven pillows for a more hygge design. If you’re going for a more modern look, try a geometric print in black and white.

Playing with throw pillows is also a safe way to test adding new colors to your palette. If you like the way one of these colors goes in your space, you can consider adding a chair or area rug that pulls in more color.

Add a Piece of Statement Art

If the same statement artwork has hovered over your sofa for more than a decade, it may be time to switch it out for something new. When you update your wall art, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the increased attention your living room gets.

Adding a modern piece above a transitional sofa such as the Mila Transitional 5-Piece Sectional with Exposed Wood Legs from Bernhardt makes the space feel fresh and modern. You can keep the modern feel with metallic end tables and other accessories, or go more eclectic with a pop of color and some traditional pieces, it’s your choice.

Bring in Flowers for a Breath of Fresh Air

Flowers are another great way to add vibrancy and color to a room. Try adding some fresh, colorful blossoms, you may find you like it so much you’ll keep this living room style tip going all year long. If flowers aren’t your thing, choose some succulents and make an arrangement for your coffee table. Succulents are fairly low-maintenance and come in a wide variety of colors and sizes.

Once you’ve tried these living room style ideas, take a look around and see if anything pops out as needing a little more love and attention. Then relax in your (almost) new space.

Bring Always-on-Vacation Style to Your Bedroom

Vacationing on a lush tropical isle, relaxing, and enjoying the sun and surf is something we all dream about occasionally. Have you considered replacing your daydreams with a touch, or more, of tropical style in your bedroom? Some tropical-style furniture, citrusy toss pillows, and botanical prints, and you’re on your way. Use these tips to bring always-on-vacation-style to your bedroom.

Create a Place to Relax

As the most significant piece of furniture in your bedroom, the bed takes its rightful place as the main focal point in the space. When you’re going for tropical island style bedroom furniture, you can’t go wrong with the Island Estate Round Hill Bed from Tommy Bahama Home.
The bed features a rich assortment of island textures and materials, this bed adds a fresh mix of island-inspired style and Caribbean design to your bedroom décor. The headboard and footboard feature woven lampakanai in its natural color in a distinctive herringbone pattern.

Bring the Sunshine In

If your room has a great view and gets plenty of sunlight, then less is more when it comes to window dressing. Think sheers or even bare windows to make the view a focal point in the space. Or consider a mix of sheer and bamboo shades for a more authentic look.

Add Some Island Charm with Beachy Breezy Colors

Another thing to consider is the color palette. Citrusy yellows, greens, and oranges, sandy beiges and tans, and oceanic blues are great ways to bring in some island charm. If you prefer something more neutral, keep everything low-key and add a splash of color with red, blue, or green. Try it out by adding a toss pillow, bedclothes, or throw. If it suits you, consider painting an accent wall or bold rug on the floor.

Add a Touch of Romance with Simple Elegance

Simplicity can be key to successful décor, even in a style known for excesses in tropical, especially if you have a smallish bedroom. Use that to your advantage and make it romantic with simple colors such as pale blue or white.
The streamlined, low-profile Ocean Club Paradise Point Bed with Wood Framed Woven Rattan Panels by Tommy Bahama Home makes a simple statement in your master bedroom. This platform bed is simply embellished with a clean, geometric pattern framing the woven rattan panel on the headboard that then wraps around the platform base.
The sun-drenched sienna-colored wood creates a warm and inviting feel from head to toe. Take advantage of a gorgeous view if you have one by leaving the windows bare. Mix it up with black toss pillows and a black throw for drama.

Add Greenery with Palm Leaves and Palm Prints

Nothing says tropical style better than palm leaves, whether on the bedclothes, upholstery, or walls. Tropical greenery paired with a natural fiber rug will transport you to the sandy beaches of Florida. Raffia accents add a coastal, vintage vibe without being over the top.
Real plants are another great touch to add some tropical style to your space. Try an areca palm living happily by a sunny window, or a peace lily in spots that get moderate sunlight. Plants bring life to a space while also freshening the air.

These simple tips will help you transform your bedroom into your favorite place to relax and unwind.

8 Interior Decorating Tips That Will Always Work

So, you’re getting ready to update your interior décor. You’re excited about how great the new space will look. And then … you have to decide how you want it to look. What do you want your home to convey? And, of course, how in the world will I pull it off? Where do I even start? Once you get into it, the process can seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be.
Below are 8 interior decorating tips that always work.

1) Choose Your Colors Wisely

Love red or purple? Want a colorful space? Great. You can have it. You don’t have to go neutral if that’s not your thing. But, consider using color sparingly. It makes a bigger splash when used in artwork, fabric, and accessories. The color shouldn’t overpower the room, but rather enhance it and support the mood you want to create.

Choose a sofa you can customize and make your own, such as the Bedford Customizable Sofa from Lexington. You can choose a neutral gray and dress it up with throw pillows and other accessories.

2) Elements Every Room Should Have

Every room should contain these five elements: color, texture, print, shine, and something living. This creates a visual story of you and your family. It also tells your guests what you want them to know: this is a space that welcomes them into your home.

3) Surround Yourself with Things You Love

Sure, imitation is the best form of flattery, but only if it truly expresses who you are. Make sure your home is filled with the things you love. When you enter a room, you want it to feel like it is your own, and you want your guests to get that it tells the story of you. Whether it’s a display of family photos, a pattern you adore, or a style that speaks to you, build your rooms around the things you and your family love, and you’ll never go wrong.

4) Ground the Space with an Area Rug

Adding an area rug to a seating arrangement helps ground the grouping and tie the whole look together. The connection between the Shoreline Sofa and Chair in this Bali Hai Living Room Grouping is underscored by the area rug, encouraging conversation and increasing the relaxation and enjoyment of the living room.

5) Match Your Design to Your Style

If you’re not sure what your design should be, take look at what you love in fashion and in life. If your style is Versace, your home shouldn’t be Dior or Gucci. If your musical taste is Chopin or Beethoven, your home shouldn’t look like Billie Holiday. Reflecting the life and vitality of those who live in the space is the main goal of interior decorating.

6) Invest in Quality Pieces

Build and curate a collection of home décor that reflects your style and its evolution. Choose furniture that will last both in quality and style, such as the Astuzia 5-Piece Reclining Sofa by Natuzzi Editions. If you carefully curate your home and choose pieces that last, you’ll have a home filled with items that are coveted by future generations.

7) Add Some Art

Art can change the tone of the space and give it personality. Choose a statement piece, or build a gallery wall of pieces you’ve collected over the years. Chances are, if you’ve got a cache of art, it reflects your taste and goes together in style, subject matter, and color. So, show it off in your family room, or that awkward wall space you just don’t know what to do with.

8) Don’t Be Afraid to Mix and Match Styles

You may have an overarching style – traditional, transition, or mid-century modern. Or your style may be eclectic. Don’t get too hung up on sticking to your style if you find a piece you love. By mixing styles a bit, your space will be a unique reflection of you and your lifestyle. And you’ll end up with a home you love.

My last, and possibly most important bit of advice, is to be authentic to yourself when you design your space. Look at what you have and what you want to add. Know why each piece is there. 4 Fresh Dining Room Trends for 2020

For many, gathering around the dinner table for a formal meal no longer happens regularly. There has been a "casualization" of modern entertaining, with many of us gathering around the kitchen island nibbling on cheese plates and dips. But, even in our mobile-enabled, digitized world, the dining room table is still the place people gather to honor old traditions and create new ones.
I'm not dissing casual entertaining around the kitchen island, but if you watch even one home design show these days, you'll see the reemergence of the dining room as an entertainment space. And, fortunately, now more than ever, trends in dining room décor offer options for everyone's taste and style. Here are some fresh new takes on dining room trends for 2020 and beyond.

1) Mix Textures and Styles

Matchy-matchy is a thing of the past. Today's dining rooms are filled with pieces that go together, even if they feature a variety of textures and styles. This is a great way to add warmth and dimension to your dining room. Neutral upholstered, slightly formal chairs go with a causal Rattan Pull Up Bench from the Universal Coastal Living Home collection. The bench adds a modern feel and is a great contrast to the more classic, simple design of the Escape Homecoming Dining Table from the same collection.
Don't be shy about choosing the elements you like to create a unique look for your dining room. If you love this look but aren't sure how to create it, choosing pieces from the same collection ensures you get the same feel without falling into the dreaded matchy-matchy space.

2) Add a Bench for Casual Flair

Benches are so on-trend these days that they get two mentions on our 2020 trends list. They are great space savers. If you have a smallish dining room, a bench can easily be tucked under the table to create visual space and make room for foot traffic when not in use. And if your table has one side against a bank of windows, a bench won't block the view. The Brownstone Dining Table and bench from Coast to Coast Imports gives your dining room a casual yet traditional feel that makes guests feel welcome.

3) Choose Upholstered Chairs for Comfort and Style

If you like to linger around the table for scintillating conversation, or often use your dining room as a workspace, then the importance of choosing comfortable chairs cannot be overstressed. After about an hour on metal, wood, or acrylic chairs, our derrieres will begin to complain. Upholstered dining room chairs level up the comfort and encourage people to stay and chat. In addition, they add richness, style, and texture to your dining room. Choose a simple style such as the Calista Transition Dining Table by Bernhardt and surround it with upholstered chairs from the same collection to infuse your space with casual elegance.

4) Round Dining Room Tables Create Space

Round dining room tables have been around since the Middle Ages, and a quick glance tells you why it has stood the test of time. Although the majority of dining rooms are configured for rectangular tables, a round one gives you more intimacy and fosters conversation. And as home design trends towards more open-concept spaces, there are many opportunities for round tables such as the Reverie Transitional Round Dining Table from Hooker Furniture to be incorporated into your dining room decor.

The options for dining rooms have never been so exciting. Try adding your own twist to these ideas to create the dining room that fits your taste and lifestyle.
